Octane and Caffeine

The only two things that keep this geek going

My processor recently began overheating.  After upgrading into a much bigger case (Antec 1200), the problem was  much alleviated but not gone.  I was still running consistently close to the “poof point” of my Q6600.

After getting a bit of advice from one of the best sources of info I’ve ever found, the Bit-Tech forums, I decided to purchase a Scythe Mugen heatsink/fan combo from Newegg.  After my previous bad experience (getting my netbook) I was relieved that this transaction went through quick and without a single issue.  Newegg is restoring my trust in them.

Below are a few pictures of the install.  This thing is HUGE.  Good news, my temps are much much lower.

Its a bit of a tight fit.

Not much space between the fan and the rear fans

All in all, I have like 1/8th to 1/4th an inch of clearance all the way around.  The cooler is like right against the ram on one side, and the fan is right against he case fans on the back side.  All of the fans are exhausting together.

Temps have dropped drastically.  I’m seeing a difference of 30 degrees. That is the difference of going from the stock Intel HSF (total crap) to a high-end aftermarket cooler

My windows 7 install

My Windows 7 install. Click for full size

Well folks, I made the jump.  After running XP well past Vista being “stable” I’ve taken the leap to Windows 7.  After running it for quite some time on my netbook, I formatted my main machine (that I have lovingly monikered Shelly) and installed Win7.

So far, all is well.  it was a super fast install, drivers intalled cleanly, and I am currently in the process of installing all of my apps.  I will keep you, my lovely readers, updates on my progress.

PS: I know my experience number is a little low. It is being limited by my harddrive, which is a slow 5400rpm SATA drive. I also did the test while I was doing some installs and copying files. I will do a retest later and repost my scores
